Sephora Ad Campaigns: The Best of Beauty Marketing
Oct 06, 2026
Sephora, the world-renowned omni retailer, with over 2,700 operating stores in 35 countries worldwide, is dominating marketing in the beauty industry.
Sephora offers nearly 340 brands, including prestige brands and its own private label, Sephora Collection. Sephora’s beauty product categories include cosmetics, skincare, fragrance, body care, and haircare.
Sephora’s primary consumer age group consists of 18- to 34-year-olds. Although this age group makes up the majority of Sephora’s consumers, Sephora continues to advertise and market to everyone and anyone, not just a specific group.
It would have been easy for Sephora to target its primary consumer age group in all of its campaigns just to drive product sales, but Sephora is more strategic than that.
Sephora uses its ads and marketing channels to target anybody and everybody, no matter their age, gender, physique, or interests. There is a common misconception that to shop at Sephora, you have to wear makeup, be a makeup guru, or even identify as a woman, but that’s not the case.
There are so many beauty departments within Sephora that there is something for everyone. From cosmetics to skincare to haircare to body care, Sephora caters to everyone. So, if you can cater to everyone, why limit your ads to a specific group when they can include and target everybody?
Sephora does this all too well in its ads. Not only do they incorporate their diversity and inclusion statement into each Sephora ad campaign, but they also go the extra mile to promote beauty, confidence, and uniqueness.
Sephora’s Diversity and Inclusion Mission

Sephora’s Diversity and Inclusion mission statement is, “To never stop championing all beauty fearlessly and building inclusive environments for our employees, consumers, and communities.”
Beauty is no longer about fitting into a specific mold but is instead a canvas for self-expression, creativity, and confidence. Sephora is committed to bringing diversity, equity, and inclusion to the beauty industry. This mission is clearly the core meaning behind their recent ad campaigns over the past seven years.
Ad 1: The Unlimited Power of Beauty (2020)

In 2020, Sephora collaborated with the French advertising agency BETC to release its “The Unlimited Power of Beauty” ad campaign. The campaign’s message was, “Beauty isn’t a standard, a size, or a filter. It’s power, confidence, and self-love.”
The short film for this Sephora ad campaign, directed by Jonas Lindstroem, tells the story of a woman’s relationship with her own beauty through each stage of her life. The three-minute film begins with the woman in her childhood playing with makeup, but as the film progresses, we see her battling with self-love as she grows into a woman.
At each stage, we see the woman’s personal evolution with self-love and confidence, only to see her live in this endless cycle of having to restart at the beginning to rediscover self-love in her body during each new phase of life.
The film highlights the phases each woman goes through in life as she struggles to find self-love and confidence: comparing yourself to others, being able to see the beauty in others but not yourself, and wondering what you can do to feel beautiful. Lindstroem does a great job depicting the common internal battles a woman experiences throughout her life.
This ad shows women that they’re not alone in struggling to love themselves, which is empowering. The Sephora ad campaign shows authenticity and creates a connection between women viewers so they don’t feel alone in these battles. Sephora does an amazing job providing insight into the journey of self-discovery and how it doesn’t have to be seen as a weakness, but something empowering.
This ad shows how beauty has no limits. You are beautiful in every way and at every point in time. Sephora achieved its main goals of inclusion, self-love, and confidence in this ad campaign.
Ad 2: Black Beauty Is Beauty (2021)

In 2020, Sephora became the first major retailer to commit to The 15 Percent Pledge, dedicating at least 15% of its shelf space to Black-owned brands. The 15 Percent Pledge is an initiative that urges major retailers to reflect America’s Black population, which makes up 15 percent, in the amount of Black-owned products they supply. Since then, Sephora has expanded its Black-owned brand assortment from eight to 32.
The short film “Black Beauty Is Beauty” was an appreciation of and dedication to Black culture’s influence on the beauty industry. Directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Garrett Bradley in 2021, the film addresses the systemic erasure of Black contributions by tracing the influence of Black culture in modern products, trends, and styles we know and love today. Bradley credited the Black community where credit was due.
The minute-long film travels through the past and present, depicting the Black community’s influence on the world of beauty. We see stylists styling customers’ hair in beauty salons, performers and drag queens preparing for the stage, and mothers at home styling their daughters’ hair.
Meanwhile, throughout the film, there are flashes of moments in history that match these modern-day scenes, reflecting these same experiences.
The Sephora ad campaign shows how deeply rooted Black culture has been throughout beauty history in a respectful way that shows appreciation and recognition rather than mainstream performative values.
Sephora treated the history of Black beauty innovation with the intent of showing its audience and the Black community that it recognizes their roles and contributions to everyday beauty practices. This ad aligns perfectly with its Diversity and Inclusion mission.
Ad 3: We Belong to Something Beautiful (2024)

In 2019, Sephora announced its new tagline and manifesto, “We Belong to Something Beautiful.” This tagline quickly became the core of Sephora’s ad campaigns. The tagline’s goal was to “reinforce their dedication to fostering belonging among all clients and employees and to publicly strive for a more inclusive vision for retail in the Americas.”
In 2024, Stefanie Soho used this tagline to curate a heartfelt ad for Sephora that captures the goal perfectly. In the ad, Soho captures intimate moments between a mixture of diverse groups of all identities, ages, and styles. What makes these moments so intimate is how clearly we can see the support, self-expression, confidence, and love—not only that each individual possesses, but also how they are able to effortlessly bring it out in each other.
We see a safe space created by the people within each group. In each clip, there are different groups of people doing different fun things, but what remains the same is the individual beauty that shines through each person.
By bringing in different groups of people and giving them a safe space to be themselves, we can see how brightly they shine and how their confidence grows, creating a true sense of belonging and connection. This Sephora ad campaign is an encapsulation of its goal to promote uniqueness, confidence, and diversity.
Takeaways

Although these Sephora ad campaigns are created to promote the brand and encourage consumers to purchase its products, the main focus behind Sephora’s ad campaigns is to discover and be proud of your own unique beauty.
Using real people, Sephora strategically promotes the idea that you are beautiful the way you are, while also showing how you can use makeup for creative purposes and self-expression. The messages behind Sephora’s ad campaigns never imply that you need makeup to feel or be beautiful.
Sephora stands behind its Diversity and Inclusion mission in a way that is refreshing and new to this generation. Sephora is an inspiration and is paving the way to promote self-love and confidence in a way that other brands have not before.
