Influencer Partnerships

Influencer marketing is broadening modern creative marketing strategies to a new level.

Social media users are exposed to new products everyday, many using social media to research their next purchase.

This is especially true with beauty brands, with the rise of beauty influencers creating new content daily. Beauty influencers are able to introduce their viewers to multiple products with every piece of content. By the end of the video, their followers understand why they need this product in their own routines.

Influencers have gained more visibility and beauty brands have been noticing. In the past decade, there has been a rise of brands partnering with influencers to connect with their followers and reach new consumers. These partnerships are successful when done with intention: beauty brands don't want to just connect with a large following, they want to reach the right one. In order to do this with influencer marketing, beauty brands have to create authentic and relevant influencer relationships.

Social media users are exposed to traditional marketing strategies everyday. By introducing influencer marketing, beauty brands have the ability to present their products in a way that is relatable and easy to understand.

When influencer marketing is done correctly, it becomes a powerful marketing strategy. Successful brand collaborations require more than picking the largest following. Understanding why these partnerships resonate with consumers, selecting the right influencers, allowing creative freedom, and developing long-term relationships can help beauty brands create more authentic connections with their target audience.

Why do Influencer Partnerships matter?

Gone are the days of television stands and magazine placements! Social Media broadens user's attention to multiple channels. Social Media platforms have been integrating into every aspect of life. It has been a rising platform for companies, brands, and everyday life. As social media has worked its way into our daily lives, so have influencers.

Influencers are social media content creators who have the power to persuade their audience into purchasing decisions. Influencers have authority, knowledge, a position, or a relationship with their audience. This is especially true with beauty brands where authentic visual results matter.

With the rise of influencers comes a new opportunity for marketers: influencer partnerships. Influencer partnerships are when a brand collaborates with an influencer to promote a product, boost sales, or grow brand awareness to the creator’s audience.

According to Matter Communications, 69% of social media users trust influencer recommendations. LinkedIn states that 75% of people use social media when making purchasing decisions. When a viewer is confident about an influencer recommendation, the product is more likely to make a sale. Beauty brands can use that influence to invest into meaningful influencer marketing campaigns.

But is the investment worth it? Digital Marketing Institute states that 85% of marketers use influencer campaigns to promote new customer acquisition. Storyclash claims that these brands earn an average of $5.78 for every $1 spent.

Influencer marketing partnerships provide a high ROI and help brands personally connect with their target audience.

Why do Influencer Partnerships in Beauty Work?

Consumers come across an overwhelming amount of promotional content. When researching beauty products, social media users look for three key things: authentic video content, honest reviews, and insight on the product's performance.Organic content is even more impactful when an influencer they trust promotes products that suit their needs.

Ad fatigue is especially true with beauty brands. The beauty population on social media is incredibly concentrated and growing everyday. Trynow states, "When your audience sees the same ad four, five, six times, performance craters. But here's what's less obvious: they're not just tired of your creative. They're tired of your offer."

This doesn't just harm sales. It also harms brand awareness. Social media users repeatedly see the same promotional content formats and stop paying attention. This makes a creator's job within an influencer campaign that much more important. Influencers on marketing campaigns create authentic content that is refreshing, relatable, and suits their needs.

With beauty brands, consumers want to see the visual transformation without overproduction. In traditional beauty brand advertisements, viewers are aware that it is highly curated. They are watching hired models and the results feel unattainable.

Digital Marketing Institute states that 3% of consumers would consider buying a product in-store if promoted by a celebrity. That number jumps to 60% who would buy the product when promoted by an influencer. This makes influencer partnerships more powerful than ever.

Social media users go to influencers for product recommendations because they seek relatability and authenticity. When watching a beauty influencer, they know they are getting a truthful representation of the product’s performance.

Consistently exposing consumers to many content formats from a beauty influencer builds familiarity with their audience. Consumers are getting product information from a trusted and familiar source.

At the core of what makes beauty influencers so persuasive is the relationship they’ve built with their followers. Influencer relationships with their followers is a powerful tool when creating campaigns around influencer marketing.

Beauty creators have an active presence in their follower’s lives. They are constantly creating and sharing content. The longer the consumer follows an influencer the deeper that personal connection and trust grows. They become a part of the consumer's daily life.

Consumers are choosing to engage with a creator's content. They are drawn to their relatability, aspirational qualities, or their pure entertainment value. The relationship they build leads to a meaningful, personal connection and that creator feels like a friend. A friend whose opinion they value.

Choosing the Right Influencers for Beauty Brands

With influencer marketing, choosing the right influencer is pivotal for a successful campaign. There are key considerations the brand needs to make when developing campaigns:

1. The Campaign's Target Audience and How that affects Influencer Marketing Strategies

Every beauty creator attracts their own specific audience to their content. Being able to understand what viewers an influencer attracts to their social channels and how that aligns with the brand's goals is necessary before deciding to move forward with a partnership.

Imagine a beauty brand is building a campaign to promote a skincare infused base product. In this campaign, they want to reach an audience that would realistically use that product.

The brand would want to put that product in front of the right people to convert and boost sales in their marketing campaign. In this case, the target audience would be makeup lovers who are also interested in skincare. When sourcing an influencer for this campaign, the beauty brand would find influencers whose followers love makeup, but also want to take care of their skin in the process.

2. Using Campaign Goals & Different Types of Influencers to Strengthen Influencer Marketing Strategies

Campaign goals act as a guideline for their influencer marketing strategy. Different campaign goals indicate different marketing strategies to use when sourcing influencers. Brands typically consider two types of influencers for influencer marketing campaigns:

Micro Influencers (1,000 - 300,000 followers)

Most beauty influencers fall into this category. Micro Influencers are everyday consumers with approximately 1,000 - 300,000 followers. They are trusted with a high degree of credibility and confidence from their audience. These influencers choose to advocate for products or brands they genuinely believe in.

Their audience is niche and are capable of bringing the brand closer on a personal level to consumers. This makes them especially effective towards influencer marketing initiatives for sales conversions.

Macro Influencers (300,000 - 1,000,000 followers)

Macro influencers have broader reach from their large and diverse audience. They have spent years building their following and working on influencer campaigns. They posses cultural authority that is capable of elevating the brand as an industry leader. Their diverse following makes them especially effective towards influencer marketing initiatives for brand awareness by showcasing the brand to a new audience.

Follower counts and views are not the most valuable metrics to predict a successful campaign. For influencer marketing strategies for sales conversions, engagement is what matters.

When influencers create content with higher engagement, this indicates that their content resonated with their followers.

Their followers are choosing to like, share, or comment. High engagement signals to the algorithm that the content provides value and pushes it on follower's feeds, bringing the product to a new audience. While the increase of brand awareness is lower, it is more likely to lead to conversions and sales. While the increase of brand awareness is lower, it is more likely to lead to conversions and sales.

Micro influencers typically have high engagement rates. They have curated a close and loyal following. For this reason, brands have started to pivot towards micro influencers. This is especially true with beauty brands, where ad fatigue is most prevalent.

If beauty brands want product awareness, they may pick an influencer with a high engagement rate, but a smaller following.

If the beauty brand wants brand awareness, they might pick an influencer with a large following, but with a lower engagement rate. This ensures that the brand is getting in front of a large demographic of people to increase their brand awareness. Either way, with micro influencers, macro influencers or celebrities, the product or brand is put in front of an audience that would be invested in the influencer’s opinions and contributing to sales conversions.

3. Understand the Influencer's Content Niche

Does the creator’s specific niche align with the types of products the brand creates?

Influencers rely on their content niche to guide their creative process. Their content niche is what makes their audience find their content.

If a beauty brand partners with an influencer who does not create beauty content or show interest in beauty, it confuses the audience. The campaign loses the impact it could've had with another creator within that niche. The campaign loses its authenticity and feels overly promotional.

This is because the brand and creator don't align. In effective influencer marketing strategies, there is a seemless transition between promotional content and the creator's content.

Let's use the previous example of promoting a skincare-infused base product.

For the creator's content niche to align with the brand, their online presence includes beauty in some form. They posted makeup tutorials or skincare products and advice videos.

When the brand partners with this influencer, they would be able to naturally integrate the beauty product into their content. It fits naturally in their exisitng content strategy. Understanding this alignment is important for creating campaigns with the most impact.

4. Understand the Influencer's Values & Personality

When partnering with a creator on a marketing campaign, they become an extension of the brand. This creator creator should already exemplify the brand's existing values. During the campaign, they should be able to authentically communicate the brand's message.

For the beauty industry, this means aligning the brand's voice and visual identity with the influencer's online personality.

Let's say a beauty brand defines themselves as creative, bold, and playful. The creators that represent this brand should have the same personality on their own platforms. Without this consistency, the partnership seems inauthentic and weakens marketing strategies.

Building Long-Term Partnerships with Beauty Influencers

Once the brand has activated their influencer marketing campaign, the work towards building meaningful relationships is far from over.

Not all brand collaborations are treated equally. For a brand to build meaningful relationships with their consumers, this can be taken even further. How? With long-term influencer partnerships and brand ambassador programs.

When a brand collaborates with an influencer on one campaign, that allows minimal room for growth for the brand and the influencer. When the relationship between a brand and their influencer partners grows stronger, so does the brand.

When an influencer creates a long-term partnership with the brand, they can continuously contribute to the brand's sales initiatives and grow their own following as they create more content to represent them.

The influencer can grow their following through these long-term partnerships. As they continue to collaborate, fans of the brand drive traffic onto the influencer's platforms. In the beauty community, the brand's following recognizes the influencer as an extension of a brand they love.

Over time, the influencer becomes more familiar with the brand, the brand’s message, and their products. Their content naturally integrates more of the brand's products. This allows for recommendations to occur seamlessly and with more detail.

Not only does this benefit the brand, but it also benefits the beauty influencer's credibility. Through recognition of this partnership, the influencer gains more credibility with their new audience.

When the audience begins to recognize the influencer and brand's strong relationship, they begin to trust the brand. They gain familiarity with the brand as the recommendations become more natural. As the influencer creates more content, the brand gains more exposure.

The Power of Authenticity in Partnerships

Influencer marketing is relationship-driven. Not only the relationship between the influencer and the brand, but the influencer and their followers. The value of these partnerships is from the influencer's established connection with their followers.

In order to maintain this relationship, authenticity is essential. These partnerships need to feel natural within the creator's content. The goal of these partnerships isn't just exposure making a sale. With authentic partnerships, consumers become more familiar with the brand and the brand starts to build trust with their new audience.

The strongest influencer campaigns create value and benefit all three parties involved. The brand gains trust from their new audience. Influencers can grow their following and gain credibility in the beauty space. Consumers are able to learn about new products from a trusted source.

Authenticity is the underlying factor that makes these collaborations successful. When naturally integrated into a creator's content, their followers are more likely to trust the recommendation. By picking the right creator that aligns with the same values and allowing them creative freedom, the brand and influencer are able to grow their following and achieve their goals. The longer these partnerships last, the more familiar the creator and their followers become with the product.

When done correctly, authentic partnerships leave a lasting impact for everyone involved. Brands are able to gain awareness and build their credibility. Creators receive opportunities that align with their content and their following. Consumers are able to receive relevant recommendations from a trusted source.

Rather than focusing solely on reach, beauty brands that are hoping to strengthen their social media strategies should focus on building genuine relationships with creators that have developed that trust with their followers.
