celebrity advertising

Have you noticed how prevalent brand collaborations and partnerships are these days?

Celebrity advertising aims to positively impact consumer perception by incorporating multiple celebrities into their advertisements.

In Los Angeles, social media gives these campaigns even more reach. This piece specifically looks at how effectively this works in the city.

From smoothie collabs to pop-ups, the appeal goes beyond the allure of such celebrities.

The strongest campaigns depend on the right creative direction and a celebrity's image. Below, we break down the evolution of successful celebrity endorsement strategies.

It’s All About LA and Celebrity Content

It is no secret that Los Angeles is home to countless film stars and social media influencers.

The city has built a reputation for its entertainment and fame culture. The best of the best are at the community’s fingertips, along with some of the most unique restaurants, cafes, and events. With this in mind, L.A. has built its own celebrity status and identity, making it a great catalyst for celebrity advertising.

An iconic and local eatery that does a great job of gaining consumer attention is Mel’s Drive-In. The beloved, old-fashioned diner chain has partnered with various public figures and brands.

One effective example of celebrity advertising involves musician Lana Del Rey.

She has her own milkshake on the menu, along with limited menu items inspired by past album releases. The first was the piña colada “Honeymoon Shake”, during the release of Honeymoon. Inspired by Did you know there’s a tunnel under Ocean Boulevard, “The Grants” is a chocolate hazelnut and banana milkshake.

This collaboration works because it reaches its target audience. Lana Del Rey’s image and Mel’s Drive-In’s retro aesthetic naturally complement one another. Lana’s brand recognition relies on California's dreamy, vintage glamour and imagery.

Mel’s Drive-In brings you back in time with its nods to the Americana aesthetic, much like Lana’s music. Her fanbase has since used the diner to feel connected to her and the world she has artistically built.

Whether fans are visiting from out of town or are local, the diner has become a must visit spot. While the general public may not understand the appeal, the fandom exemplifies strong purchase intention.

The Evolution of Celebrity Endorsers

Celebrity advertising is by no means a new business concept, but it has evolved. In the past, celebrities were simply paid to endorse products. Now, they are part of the experience itself, encouraging consumer behavior and engagement.

Since the celebrity world is intertwined into the city's culture, it’s easy to feature them in events. L.A. brands are known to work closely with these stars, building interactive experiences. At a time where authenticity is important, this creates stronger engagement with customers.

In light of of Love Island USA, the trendy PopUp Bagels collaborated with bombshell Jen Terry.

The brand played off the internet's transformation of calling Jen a “nothing burger” to an “everything bagel”. Fans could order “the Jen”, a bag of everything bagels, for a limited time. Not only did they create this special menu item, but they also hosted a meet and greet event in Brentwood.

Limited edition items work because they cultivate exclusivity and a sense of urgency for customers. Pop-ups like this can increase brand credibility and sales because consumers feel like they are getting an inside look into a celebrity’s lifestyle.

It’s no surprise this event gained attention, as the reality tv show was all the internet could talk about. By tapping into consumer interest, PopUp Bagels turned the collaboration into a viral social media moment.

Social Media & Celebrity Endorsements

With the use of social media and marketing management, celebrity advertising can transcend traditional advertising. Once the product launches on social media, customers become part of the campaign.

If you’re in L.A., it’s likely that you are posting about it. With all the aesthetic lattes and collaborations, it’s hard not to. Countless TikTok and Instagram posts about L.A. hotspots can eventually reach every corner of social media, creating global reach.

A brand and product that has not failed to stay relevant is the Erewhon smoothie.

Every month, the grocery store collaborates with a famous person to create a new smoothie. This lures potential consumers in to the store.

Since these collaborations are consistent, Erewhon is able to remain relevant. Many customers try the smoothies and post their thoughts online.

The most popular being Hailey Bieber’s “Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie”, which has become a menu staple. At the same time, this has helped promote her viral skincare brand, rhode.

In this case, Hailey Bieber created the initial buzz, but customers have kept it a success. The constant conversation generates a desire to try the smoothie and to take part in the L.A. experience.

FOMO is the Secret Ingredient for Consumer Marketing

The common denominator among viral pop-ups is the fact it’s exclusive appearing.

Celebrity appearances are revealed shortly before they happen and take place in major cities. Only those who are nearby have the opportunity to attend.

Social media then creates a sense of urgency and fear of missing out. If you weren’t around to experience it, you’ll see it all over your feed. It’s not all about the product itself, but rather experiencing an exclusive event and feeling “in the know”.

The involvement of celebrities as brand ambassadors can create excitement and make an experience more appealing.

For the release of “Joy”, Role Model hosted a promotional pop-up for fans in the Los Angeles area. He partnered with Edith’s to serve blue slushies, and as a surprise, Role Model himself served them to fans. This created fan engagement while also promoting his new album, Chuck Timely and the Hourglass.

Celebrity Advertising and Star Power are Here to Stay

Celebrity advertising has grown from being a simple marketing tactic to an experience for consumers.

These experiences create a positive image for brands on social media while encouraging consumer engagement and participation.

Throughout these examples, we have seen how L.A. creates the perfect environment for this type of marketing. The evolution of celebrity endorsements, the power of social media, and the use of "FOMO" as a marketing tool all contribute to the success of these campaigns.

Los Angeles is an ideal setting for reaching potential customers, with its celebrity culture, trendy hotspots, and social media scene.

Maybe that’s why celebrity advertising works so well in Los Angeles: it doesn’t only sell us the product, it sells us a little piece of magic.
