Cooler weather and changing leaves mean breaking out the comfy knitwear, plaid patterns, and rich autumnal colors.

Autumn's appeal in fashion arises from the blend of nostalgia, transitional back-to-school routines, and warm aesthetic. Dressing for fall is definitely one of the most fun times of the year, and it also provides a great opportunity to redefine work attire.

For all of the marketing girlies out there who want to be comfortable and chic, you deserve a wardrobe as stylish as the campaigns you design. Here are some tips on curating the ultimate fall work capsule wardrobe. 

What is a capsule wardrobe, and how do I build one that reflects my personal style?

In short, a capsule wardrobe is a small, carefully selected collection of versatile clothing (typically 20 to 30 items) that can be styled for a variety of occasions. 

Instead of shopping fleeting trends only to end up feeling like nothing goes together, a capsule wardrobe focuses on timeless, adaptable essentials that maximize outfit combinations and take away the hard decision-making. 

How can I translate this into my workwear? Good question. When building a work capsule wardrobe, start by looking at what you already have in your closet. What pieces do you reach for over and over? What pieces do you never wear? What items do you feel absolutely you in? 

The key to business casual is taking the basics that you already have and elevating them. When purchasing new clothes, focus on versatility. A balanced work capsule wardrobe typically includes 50% basics with the other 50% made up of statement and/or elevated pieces.

This list is also intentionally compact to leave room for individual creativity and build on what you may already have in your closet rather than list every piece you could need.

A high-level basics breakdown

As I mentioned above, a lot of people already have many of the basics. I'll briefly list a few that would work well within a capsule wardrobe before going into depth on the fun stuff. Keep in mind, professional color palettes typically include 2 to 3 neutrals and 2 to 3 accent colors.

• A basic tee in white, black, or grey as a base and blank canvas for layers

• A neutral or darker color long-sleeve to give those fall vibes

• A classic black dress (or another neutral) that transitions from day to night

• A pair of everyday professional shoes such as loafers, flats, or low heels

Now that you have a foundation, here are the pieces that can level up your basics into a stylish, expressive, and individual workwear collection.

Tops

A white button-down

A crisp white button-down shirt is a year-round essential that can be styled both on its own and as a layering piece. Wear as a relaxed/baggy top, either tucked or untucked, or use it as a base layer underneath a crewneck for a more preppy look on those colder days.

This one may seem obvious, but in my experience, a good white button-down can be hard to find. I tend towards a more relaxed fit with a structured collar.

An elevated blouse/top

This is a broad category because it can really be whatever you want it to be. This is the space to choose something elevated, and perhaps a bit unique. That could mean a different fabric than you usually wear, a different neckline, or an interesting silhouette.

This top can be paired with your work trousers for a professional and polished look, or with jeans to dress them up. 

A cozy knit sweater

Everyone’s fall favorite, the cozy knit. Whether you prefer cotton, cashmere, or wool, a fall sweater is an absolute must-have.

This item also leaves a lot of room for choice and a wide range of styles to choose from. A reliable option would be a classic crewneck in a neutral color like black, brown, or grey. However, you can also go for an autumn color like burgundy or burnt orange. Lightweight cotton blends are more layer-friendly if you live in a warmer climate.

Fashion tip: Just because this is for the office doesn’t mean it has to be boring! You can express individuality in your work capsule wardrobe through texture, fabric, and shape. Try out a new sweater knit or fun accent color.

A throw-on cardigan

This might sound repetitive, but trust me, they give off different vibes! The cardigan works as a partner with your base layer rather than overpowering it, allowing various color combinations and styling options. 

Also, if the workday suddenly warms up or you decide to go on a hot girl walk, you still have an accessory! Throw the cardigan over your shoulders or around your waist to keep the statement but lose the sweat. 

Fabric 101: Invest in quality fabrics, especially with sweaters. They may be more expensive up-front, but their longevity and warmth make the price worth it. Just don’t throw your wool/cashmere sweaters in the dryer!

Bottoms

A pair of dark-wash, straight-leg jeans

What’s better than a pair of jeans you can wear to the workplace? Dark-wash denim can present as quite professional, especially when paired with an elevated top or cardigan. Straight-leg jeans also give structure to the outfit, keeping the look more sophisticated than casual.

My personal recommendation here has to be the Levi’s Baggy Dad Jeans or the Levi’s Cinch Baggy Jeans. A tried-and-true brand that has lasted me years, with an adjustable waistband that is girl dinner friendly.

Trouser-style pants

A pair of tailored trousers is essential for formal work occasions like presentations or events. Really take the time to make sure that they fit well but are still comfortable. My fellow short girlies, this might be the piece that requires a little alteration. A lot of trousers run on the long side in my experience.

Also, trouser-style doesn’t necessarily mean super expensive; there are great options at brands like American Eagle.

Statement pants

This is the most creatively open piece in the work capsule wardrobe bottoms category.

When I say statement, I don’t necessarily mean a crazy pattern (unless that’s what you want). In contrast to the dark-wash jeans that rely on the top to elevate it, this pant selection should be the statement, allowing you to wear a more basic top and still look polished. 

A skirt would also work here as a statement bottom (and look super cute with ballet flats or kitten heels).

Another tip for the girlies: try finding a pair of flowy pants that still look professional, like this pair from Aritzia. These pants feel super comfortable while still looking chic.

Layers

A classic blazer

A good blazer can provide structure and shape for those moments when you want to feel powerful and look like the girlboss you are.

Great options here would be an oversized blazer if you lean towards more relaxed pieces, or a bold shape-enhancing blazer. Either way, it'll level up your look.

A reliable jacket

Another transitional layer. A light or medium-weight jacket can really pull together the outfit and define the look’s vibe.

Will you go bomber or cropped trench? Make sure to consider the base layers you’ll wear with the jacket to keep your looks cohesive.

A long wool coat

This is optional for some folks but a must-have for the cold weather girlies. A long wool coat for the fall and winter is honestly the entire outfit sometimes. A classic black, brown, or grey styled with a colorful scarf is the ultimate fall fashion aesthetic. A worthy investment indeed.

A few final accessories

A Comfy Scarf

No fall look is complete without an iconic scarf to finish it off. Someone has to look chic and mysterious at the bus stop.

A red scarf over a tan jacket (I’m looking at you Swifties), or a dark purple to complement a black wool coat would be mwah, chef’s kiss.

Belt

A neutral belt is a great addition when you have the outfit put together, but it feels like something is missing. It provides a more luxurious finish and can help elevate more casual bottoms like jeans or shorts.

Fashion forget-me-not: Make sure to choose a gold or silver buckle carefully so it goes with your jewelry!

Work tote

Perhaps one of the most chic and iconic work capsule wardrobe items to invest in is the structured tote bag that holds our entire lives.
